Opening a Database

There are two types of databases in the SchoolLeader Childcare Center Management System that you can open from FrontDesk Manager:

  1.  Primary Database (only one primary database allowed on the Server)

  2.  Archive Database (one or more archive databases on the Server)

These databases together provide access to all your current active data as well as all your historical data from past years, quarters, etc.

The primary database is always the initial database that is opened when you start SchoolLeader. However, if you wish to view information in a previously created Archive Database, you can always open that Archive after FrontDesk Manager starts by going to the FILE | OPEN option off the Main System Menu.

A dialog box will be displayed presenting you with a list of the available Archive databases as shown below.

Start Primary Database (Button)

The Primary Database is defined as your current active database. There can only be one Primary database on any one system and this is also the only database that can be modified. If you currently have an Archive Database started you can restart the Primary Database by pressing this button. You can also restart the Primary Database by simply closing FrontDesk Manager and restarting it.

Start Selected Archive Database

An Archive Database is a Read-only copy of a prior Primary Database and is typically created for one of two reasons:

  1. to cleanup the Primary database and thus improve performance

  2. to take a snapshot of the Primary Database at a given point in time for historical reference

You can access this archive database by simply highlighting the specific one you want and then pressing this button. You may find it necessary to do this for such things as:

To understand how to create Archive databases please see the section titled Maintaining Database Archives found in the DB-Support Manager section of this manual.
