What is the Chart of Accounts

If you did NOT purchase the SchoolLeader Accounting Package, then you can bypass these chapters discussing the Chart of Accounts.

The Chart of Accounts (COA) are your "categories" of different types of accounting activity.  These Accounts help you define your revenue, expenses, liabilities, assets, etc.  The G/L Chart of Accounts is further defined by two subsidiary Chart Of Accounts, also known as subaccounts.

These subaccounts are used in your A/R and A/P subledgers which hold all the detail regarding your business activity.  The G/L holds a sumarized view of the subledger activity along with high level adjustments you might make to represent different business events (e.g. taking out a loan to inject more cash into the business)..

Each Chart of Accounts is defined separately, so you only need to define the ones you need.  The definitions of your Chart of Accounts may de driven by your accountant's requirements, your governing agency such as a church or corporate office, or by your own personal preferences.   If you are not sure how to define your COA's, please consult with your accountant.
